Breathe easy: 2 tips for good respiratory hygiene

Our respiratory system is a crucial part of our well-being, and maintaining good respiratory hygiene is essential for optimal health. By adopting simple practices, we can help safeguard our lungs and reduce the risk of respiratory infections. Here are two key tips to promote good respiratory hygiene.

1. Hand hygiene:

Proper hand hygiene is at the forefront of good respiratory hygiene. Our hands are in constant contact with various surfaces and objects, potentially carrying germs and viruses. To prevent respiratory infections, it's crucial to wash your hands regularly and effectively.

Wash your hands: Use soap and water and scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Pay close attention to the spaces between your fingers and under your nails. Handwashing should be done:

- After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.
- Before and after preparing or consuming food.
- After using the restroom.
- After touching surfaces in public places.
- Upon returning home from outside.

Use hand sanitizer: When soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol content.

2. Respiratory etiquette:

Practicing good respiratory etiquette is another essential aspect of maintaining respiratory hygiene. This involves taking precautions to minimize the spread of respiratory droplets that can carry infections.

Cover your mouth and nose: When coughing or sneezing, always cover your mouth and nose. Use a tissue, handkerchief, or the inside of your elbow. This prevents respiratory droplets from being released into the air and potentially infecting others.

Dispose of tissues properly: If you use a tissue, dispose of it immediately in a closed bin. Do not leave used tissues lying around, as they can still contain infectious agents.

Wear a mask in public: In situations where physical distancing is challenging, wearing a mask can help reduce the spread of respiratory droplets. Masks should cover your nose and mouth completely.

Maintain distance: Whenever possible, maintain a safe distance from others, especially if someone is displaying symptoms of a respiratory infection.

Practicing good respiratory hygiene not only protects your health but also contributes to public health by reducing the spread of infections. These simple habits can go a long way in safeguarding your respiratory system and the well-being of those around you.
